What Is Zakat?

Zakat, a pillar of Islam, holds special significance during Ramadan. It's a compulsory form of charity where Muslims donate a portion (usually 2.5%) of their wealth to help the less fortunate. During Ramadan, the blessings of giving are multiplied, making it an ideal time to fulfill the Zakat obligation. Muslims calculate their Zakat based on their assets, including savings, investments, and gold, ensuring everyone can benefit from the blessings of generosity.

Zakat is charity Muslims give to help the needy. It's compulsory and calculated based on wealth

During Ramadan, Zakat becomes even more important. Muslims fulfill this obligation to spread blessings and help those in need.

How to Calculate Your Zakat

Explore the concept of how to calculate your zakat in these 6 easy steps:

Step 1: Determine Your Nisab Threshold

The Nisab serves as the minimum wealth for Zakat obligations. To qualify, check the market value of gold or silver. It's 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. If you have this amount or its cash equivalent, Zakat is obligatory.

Step 2: Assess Your Assets

For a precise Zakat calculation, evaluate all your assets like cash, savings, investments, jewelry, and business assets. Don't include non-eligible assets like your main home or personal items.

Step 3: Deduct Liabilities

If you have debts or loans, deduct them from your total assets when calculating Zakat. Zakat applies only to the net value of your assets.

Step 4: Calculate Zakatable Assets

After calculating your total assets and subtracting any liabilities, you'll have your Zakatable assets. These are the assets used to calculate Zakat.

Step 5: Calculate Zakat

Donating Sadqa for healthcare helps fund initiatives offering medical care to those in need. This can involve building hospitals, providing equipment, medical treatments for lasting impact.

Step 6: Pay Zakat

Once you've calculated your Zakat, the last step is to pay it to those in need. You can give directly to eligible recipients or contribute to trustworthy organizations that manage Zakat distribution.

Abdul Sattar Edhi

Founder Profile

Born in 1928 in the small village of Bantva near Joona Garh, Gujrat (India), Abdul Sattar Edhi's journey of compassion began with the seeds planted in his soul during his mother's illness. At the age of eleven, when his mother became paralyzed and later suffered from mental illness, Edhi devoted himself to her care.
He undertook the responsibilities of cleaning, bathing, changing clothes, and feeding her. Despite his efforts, the battle against the disease proved to be challenging, and his mother's helplessness grew over the years. This early experience shaped Edhi's lifelong commitment to alleviating the suffering of humanity.

Faisal Edhi

Head of the Edhi Foundation

The visionary & courageous man who did not take money from the government, he wished to domesticate the habit of giving in the Pakistani people. He finally succeeded. Late Abdus Sattar Edhi's golden words, that often the people who have the least, give the most. When he started his work, he was penniless. He sat on the street and asked for donations not for himself but to help people in greater need. “I begged. And people gave,” he said. From the very beginning, people passing Edhi on the street trusted him to do good with their money.
